Canada’s Building Trades Unions welcomes the nearly $500 billion in new investment commitments announced at the Canada Investment Summit and is a historic vote of confidence in Canada and an extraordinary opportunity to build our country.
Yesterday, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the federal government is building on that momentum with the new Productivity Mega Deduction, a game-changing tax incentive that will expand the assets eligible for immediate deduction from roughly 15% to more than 65%. The measure will support investment in everything from fibre-optic cable, mining property and energy infrastructure to software, computer equipment, rail, bridges and roads.
These investments can provide the certainty needed to move major projects forward and put shovels in the ground across Canada.
“This is what nation-building looks like,” said Sean Strickland, Executive Director of Canada’s Building Trades Unions. “The world is investing in Canada, and Canada’s skilled tradespeople are ready to build. These investments give project owners the confidence and certainty to move from announcements to construction, and from construction to good-paying, family-supporting jobs. But, if we are going to use public policy to accelerate private investment, we must make sure Canadians see the full benefit. Companies taking advantage of these incentives should be required to meet specific labour conditions, including paying prevailing wages and require minimum apprenticeship hours, to ensure every major project not only puts Canadians to work today, but builds the skilled workforce our country will need tomorrow. When we put shovels in the ground, we put Canadians to work. We strengthen communities. We build the infrastructure and industries that will define Canada’s future. And we put food on kitchen tables from coast to coast to coast. Canada has the resources. Canada has the capital. Canada has the workforce. Now is the time to build.”
