CBTU Statement on Labour Day

Ottawa, ON – Today marks Labour Day, a day to recognize the role of workers in building Canada and the critical infrastructure we rely on.

Workers across the country have felt the weight of U.S. tariffs this year, and workers in the construction industry have been disproportionately affected. But despite this setback, the members of the Canadian Building Trades have accomplished impressive milestones. In July, Building Trades members completed phase 1 of the LNG Canada project and made Canada’s first LNG export possible. This is a huge step forward for the country’s energy sector and our economy. LNG Canada is projected to add $23 billion to the economy over the next four decades.

“Canada’s Building Trades Unions is committed to giving back to the skilled tradespeople whose skills and hard work power our nation. Earlier this year, CBTU successfully advocated for Bill C-5 to be passed into law, and now we are focused on ensuring good jobs, prevailing wage, and apprenticeship requirements are attached to federally-funded projects to maximize the opportunities for our members,” said CBTU Executive Director Sean Strickland.

“As fall approaches and Parliament returns to session, CBTU will continue to advocate on behalf of our 600,000 members across the country. But for now, I wish them a very happy Labour Day.”

About CBTU

Canada’s Building Trades Unions are an alliance of 14 international unions in the construction, maintenance and fabrication industries that collectively represent over 600,000 skilled trades workers in Canada. Each year, our unions and our signatory contractor partners invest over $300 million in private sector money to fund and operate over 175 apprenticeship training and education facilities across Canada that produce the safest, most highly trained and productive skilled craft workers found anywhere in the world. Canada’s Building Trades Unions represent members who work in more than 60 different trades and occupations, and generate six per cent of Canada’s GDP.
